People Of The Book

Allah SWT has conferred upon the Jews and Christians the honorary title of Ahl-Al-Kitaab, People of The Book.

Unfortunately, there is the belief - prevalent amongst all 3 Abrahamic communities - that they alone are predestined for the Grace of Allah SWT. This idea gives rise to the erroneous conviction that Paradise will be peopled only by Jews, or Christians, or, lastly, Muslims. Such beliefs seek to limit and confine the Mercy of Allah SWT. The truly faithful know that HIS Mercy is All-Encompassing, All-Embracing, All-Enfolding.

Differences between Judaism, Christianity and Islam are often highlighted; but similarities need to be both affirmed and confirmed.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah, Verse 62
Verily, those who have attained to Faith (in this Divine Writ) as well as those who follow the Jewish Faith, and the Christians, and the Sabians - all who believe in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous deeds - shall have their reward with their Sustainer; and no fear need they have, and neither shall they grieve.

This statement it is repeated in Surah 5 Al-Maa'idah, Verse 69, emphasising the concept underpinning it. Thus, acceptance by God is not dependant upon sectarian, ethnic, tribal or national affiliations or attachments, it is dependant upon the fulfillment of the conditions of Faith: believing in Him; adhering to His Laws, as contained in the Torah, the Gospels and the Qur'an; performance of good deeds - without which religion and faith are rendered redundant; belief in the Last Day, which is a prerequisite, Divine Justice being dispensed when all of the actions of humankind have ceased. Then is the time for accountability and recompense - for judgement.

Surah 5, Verse 43
But how is it that they ask you for judgement - seeing that they have the Torah, containing Allah's Injunctions - and thereafter turn away? Such then, are no (true) believers.

Verse 47
Let, then, the followers of the Gospel judge in accordance with what Allah has Revealed therein: for they who do not judge in the light of what Allah has bestowed from on high - it is they, they who are truly iniquitous!

Verse 48
To every one of you have WE Appointed a (different) Law and Way of life. And if Allah had so Willed, HE could surely have made you all one single Community: but (HE Willed it otherwise) in order to test you by means of what HE has vouchsafed to you. Vie, then, with one another in doing good works! To Allah you all must return; and then HE Will make you truly understand all that on which you were wont to differ.

Permission to partake of the (halal) food of the People's of the Book is granted in Q5:5 as well as Muslim men being allowed to marry believing Jewish and Christian women.

Surah 22 Al-Hajj, Verses 39-41
Permission (to fight) is given to those against whom war is being wrongfully waged - and verily, Allah has indeed the Power to succour them,

those who have been driven from their homelands against all right for no other reason than their saying "Our Sustainer is Allah"

For, if Allah had not enabled people to defend themselves against one another (all) monasteries and churches and synagogues and masaajid - in (all of) which Allah's Name is abundantly extolled - would surely have been destroyed (before now)

These Verses reveal that maintaining, and defending-  if need be - synagogues, churches, monasteries and mosques is an absolute requirement. It is incumbent upon believers, therefore, to pay proper attention to Qur'anic Verses referring to the People of The Book: for in so doing, we realize that God's Message is inclusive, and not restrictive.

Allahu 'Alam
