The Purpose Of Language

The purpose of language is to communicate the truth. There are different levels and types of truths - both personal and universal. In its essence and substance, language is specifically intended to convey some form of information - even falsehood employs its own perverted system of language in order to propagate itself.

At the highest state of consciousness believers communicate with their Creator and recieve from HIM responses which appear and manifest themselves in an infinity of arrangements. Thus is the proper etiquette of language appeciated. These replies from the Divine are themselves transformed into beautiful speech which enable the sincere of Faith to engage in higher forms of discourse with their fellow Man.

At the exclusively material form of Man's life exist languages which demean and degrade him, they expose his mean and undignified nature. They prompt him to behave in ways which are shameful, sinful, disgraceful and evil. At this base level all truth is denied and the lower Self comprised only of I, ME, MY, MINE, gains complete ascendancy.

Languages form the basis of all communications -

1) spiritual
2) intellectual
3) emotional
4) sensual
5) physical

In order to attain and convey truths these faculties must not be corrupted but rather employed in a manner that elevates rather than debases Man. With especial regard to people of Faith, then the following Ayaat reveal who they really are -

Surah 23 Al-Mu'minun, Verse 3
WA-LLADHINA HUM 'ANI-LLAGHWI MU'RIDHUN

And those who turn away from vain/evil/sinful speech.

Surah 28 Al-Qasas, Verse 55
WA IDHA SAMI'U-LLAGHWA 'ARADHU 'ANHU WA QAALU LANAA 'AMAALUNA WA-LAKUM 'AMAALUKUM. SALAAMU 'ALAYKUM. LA NABTAGHI-L-JAAHILUN.

And when they hear vain/evil/sinful speech, they withdraw from it and say: To us our deeds, and to you your deeds. Peace be upon you. We seek not (the way) of the ignorant.

Uninhibited freedom of expression and expression of freedom have been a death-blow to exalted languages of truth. Speech has been reduced - like virtually everything else - to a commodity, without real value or meaning. In many instances it has become both cheap and sordid, composed as it is of innuendos/insinuations or flagrant and blatant dishonesty/filth - at individual and collective level. But, for those who seek the languages of beauty and beautiful languages - in all their myriad shapes - they are promised it in the Hereafter -

Surah 56 Al-Waqi'ah, Verses 25-26
LA YASMA'UNA FI-HA LAGHWAN WA LA TATHIMA
ILLA QEELAN SALAAMAN SALAAMA

No vain/false/evil talk will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech.
But only the saying of: Salaam! Salaam!
